Meet the characters of

Latchwood Vale

Madame Hootsworth Portrait with Archive Glades.png

"To alter a record is to alter memory. To omit a record is to invite chaos. Neither will I allow."

Madame Hootsworth is the long‑standing Guardian of the Archives, a role older than most living creatures in Latchwood Vale. She is a great horned owl whose presence commands her attention the moment she enters a room. Stern by nature, she speaks with deliberate precision — never wasting a word, never softening a truth. Yet beneath her rigid exterior lies a deep, unwavering loyalty to those she trusts, especially Laylah.

“If a message must reach its destination, it will — even if I have to race the wind itself.”

Laylah is the official Scrollrunner of Latchwood Vale, entrusted with delivering the most important messages across the land — from seasonal decrees to the coveted Halloween Masquerade Invitations. A red‑breasted nuthatch with sharp instincts and a steady sense of duty, she is friendly by nature but never careless. Her work is her pride, and she treats each scroll as if it carries the heartbeat of the Vale itself.

She is warm, approachable, and quick to offer help, yet she carries a seriousness that makes creatures trust her with their secrets. When Laylah arrives, it means something is happening — something worth paying attention to.

“Some days feel like embers. Some feel like sparks. Time decides which."

Emberholt is the Rootfire Keeper of Kinroot Verge, a vital role that blends tradition, elemental magic, and a daring spirit. Adventurous and laid back by nature, she moves through the Vale with an easy confidence — but when duty calls, she becomes sharp, focused, and unwavering. She is the one who gathers the rootfire from the ancient roots of Kinroot Verge, storing it, bartering with it, and using it to ignite staffs, lanterns, and the glowing light posts that guide travelers through the darker paths of Latchwood Vale.

She is the beating heart of October and November's story — the character whose choices ripple outward, whose courage shapes the season, and whose presence feels like warm embers in a cold forest.

“A broken path isn’t the end. It’s just an invitation to get creative.”

Brindlehop is the Forager of Kinroot Verge, known for his uncanny ability to locate food, resources, and hidden pathways in even the most tangled parts of the region. Handy in a MacGyver‑style way, he can improvise tools, fix broken gear, and solve problems with whatever is lying around — roots, bark, twine, stones, even scraps of Emberholt’s discarded rootfire vials.

He’s grounded, clever, and quietly confident. While he isn’t flashy, he’s indispensable. If something breaks, Brindlehop fixes it. If someone is lost, Brindlehop finds them. If a trail disappears, Brindlehop uncovers a new one.

Sera holding lumenites portrait.png

“Every wound has a story. I mend the parts that hurt the most.”

Sera is the swift, sharp‑witted Lumenite Keeper of Whispering Falls, a reptilian healer whose craft blends instinct, agility, and the neon‑blue lumenflare she draws from the river’s glowing flowers. Gentle by nature and endlessly patient with those in pain, she is anything but fragile — her twin daggers move as fast as her feet, and her reflexes make her one of the most formidable protectors in the Falls. She and Ivan have been close since childhood, their long‑standing friendship strengthened by the fact that both are master dagger‑fighters who move in perfect rhythm when danger rises.

Warm‑hearted and quick on her feet, her lightly sarcastic humor keeps others alert and reminds them she’s always a step ahead.

“If there’s a shortcut, I’ll find it. If not, I’ll make one.”

Ivan is the seasoned, sharp‑eyed Ridgewater Scout of Whispering Falls, an otter whose maturity never overshadows his playful spirit. He jokes often and laughs easily, but beneath that lighthearted surface lies a scout who takes his work — and the safety of the Vale — very seriously. He’s unmatched at finding shortcuts through forests, rivers, markets, and even crowded gatherings, navigating the Vale with an instinct that borders on uncanny.

Whether sensing incoming storms, detecting danger before it arrives, or guiding travelers along safer routes, Ivan’s intuition is one of Whispering Falls’ greatest assets. He and Sera grew up together, forming a lifelong bond built on trust, mischief, and shared responsibility.

“Paths change. The land shifts. But a well‑made tunnel endures.”

Stoneburrow is the Routeshifter of Thornville Meadow, a hedgehog whose life’s work lies above and beneath the surface of Latchwood Vale. Known for carving secret passageways through earth, root, and stone, he’s the quiet architect behind many of the hidden routes creatures rely on without ever knowing who built them. Above ground, he’s a steady wanderer — hiking ridges, camping in quiet clearings, and learning every curve of the terrain before carving its secret underpaths.

His closest friend is Tavrek, the meerkat maze‑builder of the Ochre Labyrinth. The two share a deep camaraderie forged through years of comparing tunnel designs, debating structural tricks, and swapping stories of underground near‑misses. Their crafts differ, but their minds work the same way: patient, precise, and always thinking three steps ahead.

“Paths are choices. Mazes are lessons.”

Tavrek is the disciplined, Sandscriber of the Ochre Labyrinth, a meerkat craftsman who shapes the desert from the inside out. Beneath the scorching ochre sands, he designs and carves vast underground mazes — tunnels reinforced with stone, braced with metalwork, and marked with precise sand‑etched symbols only he can read. His work blends engineering, instinct, and artistry, turning the shifting desert into a navigable network of hidden routes.

He wears a leather armor outfit of his own making, built to withstand heat, sand, and the occasional collapse. His satchel is always at his side, heavy with chisels, metal files, leatherworking tools, and fragments of precious metals he uncovers during his tunneling. Tavrek is kind, but his default expression is a firm, uninviting straight face — a silent warning that he’s focused and not in the mood for small talk a look he drops only for his long‑time friend Stoneburrow, the one creature he trusts enough to let his guard down.
